LARGE TIBETAN THANKA OF PALDEN LHAMO - Ca. 19th century AD. > A large-scale Tibetan thangka depicting Palden Lhamo, the fierce protector goddess (dharmapala) and principal female guardian of the Tibetan Buddhist pantheon. She is shown riding her mule across a turbulent, flame-filled landscape, her dynamic posture and billowing scarves conveying relentless motion through the cosmic void. Palden Lhamo is rendered in her wrathful aspect, with a dark blue complexion, flaming hair, and a fierce expression, symbolizing her role as a protector of the Dharma. She rides side-saddle upon a mule traditionally depicted as flayed, a powerful symbol of transcendence over ignorance and attachment. The swirling waves, fire, and wind motifs surrounding her emphasize her dominion over chaotic forces and her ability to subdue obstacles. Above, a lineage of deities and teachers—likely including Buddhas and lineage masters—are seated in calm contrast, providing a hierarchical and spiritual framework to the composition. Celestial beings and attendant figures populate the sky, while in the lower register smaller narrative scenes and offering figures appear, grounding the image within ritual and devotional context. The painting is executed with fine mineral pigments on cloth, with rich greens, reds, and golds creating a vibrant yet controlled palette.
