Bidspirit auction | CHINESE WHITE JADE OF RECUMBENT
CHINESE WHITE JADE OF RECUMBENT WINGED BEAST - Ming Dynasty, Ca. AD 1368 - 1644, or earlier. > A carved jade figure depicting a recumbent mythical beast, the compact body rendered with legs tucked beneath and head raised in an upward poised attitude. The creature is carved with a pair of stylised wings defined by incised lines, while the curled tail and softly rounded forms lend a sense of balance and vitality. The stone is of varied white and dark mottled tone, with natural inclusions skilfully incorporated into the design, creating contrast between the lighter head and darker body. The surface is smoothly polished, with subtle detailing to indicate musculature and feathering. > Provenance: Private British Collection; Ex. Old European Collection, previously acquired on the European art market during the 1990s. > > Size: 42mm x 33mm; Weight: 43g > >
