GROUP OF DAN PASSPORT MASKS, LIBERIA / IVORY COAST - Ca. 19th - 20th century AD. > A group of five miniature carved wooden masks, each mounted for display, representing the portable mask tradition commonly known as “passport masks.” These small-scale objects were intended to be worn or carried, functioning as personal protective emblems and markers of identity. The masks display a coherent yet varied stylistic vocabulary: elongated oval faces, high domed foreheads, and restrained, geometric features. Eyes are typically rendered as narrow slits or almond shapes beneath subtly defined brows, while noses are long and linear, often bisecting the face.
