Unusual South Africa Synagogue Blessing Plaque Johannesburg 1924
This very high quality silver plaque was made in South Africa.
The purpose of this plaque is when a man gets called to the Torah for an aliyah, these are the blessings he recites before and after the portion of the Torah is read. This plaque was likely affixed to the table upon which the Torah scroll was placed. Notice how the Hebrew wording has the vowels included, which is most unusual for Synagogue decorated items.
Atop the Hebrew blessings it states it was donated to the "Yeoville Hebrew Congregation" in the month of Tishrei, 1924.
Yeoville is a suburb of Johannesburg, and for most of the early and mid-20th century, was the destination for orthodox Jews from Eastern Europe and other countries to settle in. At one time, Yeoville was 100% Jewish, but most of the Jews of this suburb left beginning in the 1980's.
