A C.H. Brannam Barum Ware sgraffito decorated nautical earthenware jar 36cm wide - A bulbous earthenware jar or cache pot featuring a flared rim finished in a dark brown glaze. The body is decorated in the sgraffito technique through a cream slip, revealing the darker clay beneath to depict a continuous nautical scene. The design features a stylized three-masted sailing ship with a bird-form prow, sailing atop sea-green and cobalt blue waves populated with leaping dolphins. The base of the Royal Barum jar bears several incised markings, including characters reading C. H. Brannam and Barum, identifying the piece as the work of the Litchdon Street Pottery in Barnstaple, Devon. Further incised marks to the underside include a large central cross, the letter H, and the numerals 38 above a horizontal line. The exterior surface is finished with a cream-coloured slip exhibiting a network of fine crazing. The interior of the vessel is partially glazed in a pale cream tone.
