Bidspirit auction | AN ISLAMIC SILVER AND INLAID
AN ISLAMIC SILVER AND INLAID STONE SIGNET SEAL RING. - This signet or seal ring features a silver mounting with a central oval bezel holding a dark ferrous disk. The disk is decorated using the damascene technique, or koftgari, where silver wire is inlaid into the dark ground to create dense, highly stylised Arabic or Persian calligraphy. The background of the disk has a finely stippled texture that provides a matte contrast to the smooth, polished silver script. The silver mounting is designed with a scalloped inner border surrounding the seal, and the shoulders of the shank are decorated with chased geometric patterns. This style of metalwork and calligraphic arrangement is characteristic of 19th or early 20th-century craftsmanship from the Ottoman Empire or Qajar Iran.
