AN ISLAMIC TALISMANIC HEMITITE PLAQUE WITH QURANIC INSCRIPTIONS. - A circular talismanic plaque or disc crafted from a mottled greenish-grey hemitite. The face is intricately incised with religious calligraphy. The central composition features a large, multi-lobed or scalloped cartouche containing the Ayat al-Kursi (the Throne Verse, Surah al-Baqarah, 2:255) from the Quran, executed in a refined Naskh or Thuluth derivative script. The central text is flanked by four smaller circular medallions. The top right medallion contains the Basmala (Bismillah), and the top left medallion contains the continuation al-Rahman al-Rahim. The lower medallions feature religious names; the bottom right contains the name Muhammad and the bottom left contains the name Ali, suggesting a Shiite devotional context.  Approximately 6 x 5.4cm
