AN INDIAN LACQUERED AND GILDED POWDER FLASK IN THE MYSORE STYLE, 19TH CENTURY OR LATER. - An Indian powder flask of curved horn form, constructed from lacquered wood or papier-mache. The flask terminates in a terminal modelled as a tiger head, with polychrome painted details in orange, gold, black, and red. The outer curved surface and end cap are decorated with raised floral and foliate scrollwork in gold gilding against a celadon-coloured lacquer ground. The reverse of the flask is finished in a plain, undecorated mottled grey-green lacquer. The wide end is fitted with a turned red lacquer stopper. The tiger motif is historically associated with the iconography of the court of Mysore under Tipu Sultan. L: Approximately 20cm
