AN INDIAN LACQUERED AND HAND PAINTED WOODEN LIDDED BOX FEATURING HUNTING MOTIFS. - An Indian decorative lidded box of compressed domed form, constructed from wood or papier-mache. The exterior is finished with a deep red lacquer ground, decorated with a continuous hand-painted hunting scene. The decoration features two spotted felines, potentially hunting cheetahs or leopards, in pursuit of a central running antelope or gazelle. These figures are rendered in ochre and orange with fine black outlines, in a style characteristic of North Indian decorative arts, possibly from Rajasthan or Kashmir. The circular lid is slightly recessed and decorated with concentric gold-painted bands, one of which displays a border of dark circular motifs. A patinated metal ring pull is centrally mounted to the lid. The interior is finished in a plain dark lacquer. D: Approximately 22cm
