A LARGE PORTRAIT OF MUZAFFAR AL-DIN SHAH QAJAR, PERSIAN QAJAR SCHOOL, LATE 19TH OR EARLY 20TH CENTURY. - This oil painting on canvas is a full-length portrait of Muzaffar al-Din Shah Qajar (reg. 1896-1907), rendered in the style characteristic of the late Qajar period. The Shah is depicted in a formal standing pose, wearing a dark blue European-style military tunic adorned with gold metallic aiguillettes and a broad blue sash across his right shoulder. He wears several jewelled medals on his breast and a traditional black astrakhan hat (kolah) featuring a prominent jewelled aigrette (jigha). The figure is distinguished by a large, swept-back grey moustache. His left hand rests on the hilt of a ceremonial sword with a gem-set guard, while his right hand is placed on the back of a upholstered chair featuring red and gold floral patterned fabric. The interior setting includes a dark red draped curtain to the left and a checkered brown and grey tiled floor in the foreground. Indistinct red markings are visible on the seat of the chair in the lower left. Approximately 119 x 61cm
