A SHI'A PILGRIMAGE SCROLL, LIKELY IRAN OR CENTRAL ASIA, 19TH CENTURY. - This 19th-century Islamic devotional work is executed in ink, watercolour, and gouache with extensive gold highlights on toned paper. The vertical composition features a central stylised alam or standard at the top, containing calligraphic medallions and surmounted by the invocation Ya Allah, Ya Muhammad, Ya Ali. Within the central teardrop of the alam is a calligraphic inscription, likely the Nadi Aliyyan prayer. A large Bismillah in bold Thuluth script occupies the centre of the scroll, separating the upper decorative panels from columns of fine Nasta'liq calligraphy, likely comprising prayers or Persian devotional poetry. The base of the work depicts a detailed holy shrine or zarih set within a decorative arched niche, flanked by stylised candles and geometric patterns. The piece is enclosed within a border of an ornate scrolling floral vine in green, blue, and purple. Approximately 104 x 42cm
