AN OTTOMAN ISLAMIC TALISMANIC SHIRT WITH CALLIGRAPHIC AND GEOMETRIC DECORATION, 19TH/20TH CENTURY. - An Islamic talismanic shirt, likely Ottoman, constructed from cream-coloured woven cotton or linen in a T-shape with wide sleeves and an open front. The entire surface is decorated with hand-painted calligraphy, prayers, and geometric motifs using black, red, blue, and green inks. The front features six lobed green medallions containing major invocations in bold white thuluth script, transcribed as Ya Rahim (O Merciful), Ya Hanan (O Compassionate), Ya Hayy Ya Qayyum (O Ever-Living, O Self-Subsisting), Ya Shafi Ya Kafi (O Healer, O Sufficient), Ya Fattah (O Opener), and Ya Razzaq (O Provider). The surrounding rectangular panels are filled with Quranic verses in naskh script, including portions of Surah Al-Baqarah and Surah Al-Fath, alongside various numerological abjad grids in red and black ink. The reverse side features a central panel of interlacing medallions in green and red containing dense calligraphy, enclosed within a broad border of red and black triangles forming a zigzag pattern with micro-calligraphy in the interstices.
