AN OTTOMAN ISLAMIC TALISMANIC SHIRT INSCRIBED WITH QURANIC VERSES AND PROTECTIVE DIAGRAMS. - An Ottomantalismanic shirt, also known as a jama, constructed from hand-woven cotton textile. The garment is entirely covered in hand-painted calligraphic inscriptions and geometric diagrams executed in black, madder red, indigo blue, and magenta inks. The front composition is organised into symmetrical panels. The upper chest displays square Kufic script within two black boxes, representing Allah and Muhammad. Flanking the neck are large decorative calligraphic panels. Two central blue panels are inscribed with the invocation Ya Hafiz (O Protector). Below these, red panels contain the Quranic verse from Surah Al-Fath (48:1): Indeed, We have granted you a clear triumph. The lower portion features interlocking geometric knots in magenta, surrounded by dense passages of cursive naskh script. The reverse features a central circular medallion containing a geometric knot, surrounded by a cross-shaped configuration of minute naskh script. Within the four corners of this cross are large magic squares known as buduh, containing numerical and alphabetical grids and the invocation Ya Fattah (O Opener). The neckline is finished with a green fabric trim. The sleeves and lower borders repeat geometric grid patterns and horizontal bands of script. H: Approximately 60cm L: Approximately 81cm
