Bidspirit auction | A MUGHAL-STYLE JADE TALISMANIC PENDANT
A MUGHAL-STYLE JADE TALISMANIC PENDANT WITH ARABIC INSCRIPTIONS AND FLORAL DECORATION. - A Mughal-style carved dark green jade or hardstone talismanic pendant, of stylised leaf or heart-shaped form, with a scalloped outer edge and an integral transverse suspension loop. The obverse is finely engraved with an elaborate symmetrical arrangement of scrolling arabesques, palmettes and flowering tendrils, organised around a central interlaced geometric motif. The dense vegetal ornament recalls the floral vocabulary widely employed in Mughal and Indo-Persian decorative arts. The reverse is extensively engraved with numerous lines of extremely fine Arabic-script calligraphy, arranged across virtually the entire surface within a conforming border. The density and arrangement of the inscription suggest a devotional or talismanic function, the pendant likely intended to be worn or suspended as a protective amulet. Approximately 6 x 4.3cm (hxl)
