Bidspirit auction | A GREEK MARBLE DOUBLE-ENDED PHALLIC

A GREEK MARBLE DOUBLE-ENDED PHALLIC AMULET, POSSIBLY CIRCA 3RD CENTURY AD. - A carved marble double-ended phallic amulet or votive object, formed with two opposing phalli extending horizontally from a prominent rounded central element. Above the centre are two stylised rounded projections, each with recessed circular detailing, joined above a deliberately pierced suspension hole. The object is boldly and schematically carved, with the anatomical features of both terminals clearly delineated. The central piercing indicates that the piece may have been intended for suspension or attachment, suggesting an amuletic or votive function. Phallic imagery was widespread throughout the Greek world, where the phallus served as an apotropaic symbol, associated with fertility, prosperity and protection against malign influence or the evil eye.
