Bidspirit auction | A CYCLADIC STYLE MARBLE RECLINING

A CYCLADIC STYLE MARBLE RECLINING FEMALE IDOL, POSSIBLY 3RD MILLENNIUM BC. - A carved marble anthropomorphic idol in the Cycladic tradition, attributed to the 3rd millennium BC. The figure is represented in a highly stylised and abstract manner, with an elongated oval head, prominent projecting nose, narrow neck and simplified geometric treatment of the body. The torso broadens at the shoulders and tapers towards the waist, while the lower body is formed with prominently modelled thighs and bent or folded legs. The face is characteristically minimal, the raised straight nose forming the principal facial feature, without separately delineated eyes or mouth. The reduction of the human form to smooth, carefully defined volumes is associated with the sculptural traditions of the Early Bronze Age Aegean and particularly the Cycladic islands.
