AN EARLY ISLAMIC BRONZE EWER, PERSIA OR MESOPOTAMIA, 8TH-9TH CENTURY. - An early Islamic bronze ewer, likely originating from Persia or Mesopotamia, dating to the 8th or 9th century. The vessel is constructed from heavy cast bronze and features a piriform body tapering to a narrow neck. A prominent raised rope-twist band encircles the base of the neck. The ewer is designed with a trefoil-mouth spout and a wide, flat rim extension that transitions into a tall, arched handle. The upper surface of the rim and spout is decorated with incised foliate scrollwork. The handle is cast with four horizontal ribs at the centre and terminates at the top with a rounded, two-tiered finial. The base of the handle, where it joins the shoulder, is finished with a decorative foliate palmette motif in low relief. Encircling the shoulder below the rope-twist band is a horizontal band of small, repetitive incised characters. The vessel sits upon a short, flared, circular pedestal foot. H: Approximately 30cm
