A LARGE KHORASAN SELJUK BRONZE EWER WITH KUFIC INSCRIPTIONS, 12TH CENTURY. - A large Khorasan bronze ewer from the Seljuk period, circa 12th century. The vessel is cast from a copper alloy and features a tapering cylindrical body rising to a flat shoulder and a cylindrical neck. The high, curved handle is surmounted by a zoomorphic thumbpiece in the form of a seated feline. A long, upward-slanting spout is fitted to the neck, decorated with incised foliate scrollwork and almond-shaped motifs. The shoulder is embellished with a wide horizontal band containing a stylised inscription in Kufic script, interspersed with interlaced geometric knots. The neck is divided into rectangular panels by incised lines and includes a small suspension ring. The lower body displays an incised circular roundel containing a quatrefoil floral knot motif.
