Bidspirit auction | A MESOPOTAMIAN STONE EYE IDOL

A MESOPOTAMIAN STONE EYE IDOL WITH IBEX RELIEF TELL BRAK, CIRCA 3700-3500 BC. - A Mesopotamian stone eye idol, also known as a spectacle idol, dating to the Late Chalcolithic period. The votive figure is carved from a light cream-coloured stone, likely alabaster or gypsum, and exhibits the characteristic bell-shaped body associated with the ancient site of Tell Brak. The body tapers upwards to form a head defined by two large, conjoined circular eyes, each featuring a deeply drilled pupil. This specific example is distinguished by a raised relief carving on the main body depicting a horned quadruped, identified as an ibex or stag, rendered in profile with its head turned back towards its rump. The animal is carved with long, sweeping horns. The reverse side of the object is flat, and the base is straight. H: Approximately 10.5cm
