A CHINESE-ISLAMIC HUI COMMEMORATIVE HAJJ SCROLL, LATE 19TH OR EARLY 20TH-CENTURY. - A late 19th or early 20th-century Chinese-Islamic (Hui) commemorative Hajj scroll. The item comprises multiple hand-painted and calligraphed paper panels mounted to a continuous paper backing, protected by an attached mustard-coloured leather outer wrapper with a tie. The scroll features polychrome ink and wash illustrations with gold-leaf and gilt-ink highlights, combining traditional Islamic iconography with Chinese artistic styles. The upper edge is decorated with a floral and geometric border in red, blue, and yellow. The content includes several distinct panels: a maritime and overland route map illustrating the geography between China and the Arabian Peninsula with Chinese labels; a landscape depicting the Great Wall of China with figures and camels; a bird-eye view of the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca; a depiction of the Al-Masjid an-Nabawi in Medina; and a diagrammatic representation of holy sites in Jerusalem. Extensive sections of Arabic calligraphy feature Quranic verses and prayers, presented in Sini-style Arabic and standard Chinese script. A square red ink seal appearing on multiple panels phonetically transliterates the name Abdullah (A-Bu-Du-La), likely indicating the owner or creator and consistent with the period of manufacture.
