Bidspirit auction | A ROMAN MARBLE JANIFORM BUST,

A ROMAN MARBLE JANIFORM BUST, CIRCA 2ND CENTURY A.D. - Carved in the round as a janiform double bust, depicting the bearded god Dionysus back-to-back with a youthful female figure, probably a Maenad. Dionysus is represented with a full curling beard and elaborate hair arranged with prominent ram-like curled forms, while the opposing female face is finely modelled with idealised features and similarly elaborate scrolling locks. The two heads merge into a single herm-like bust, creating a striking double-faced composition. H: Approximately 29cm (incl. stand).
