A QAJAR COPPER KASHKUL BEGGING BOWL WITH DRAGON HEAD FINIALS, 19TH CENUTRY. - This copper alloy kashkul, or dervish's begging bowl, is crafted in a traditional boat-like form with a rounded hull. The vessel features two upturned finials at either end, cast in the form of stylised dragon heads with open mouths and bared teeth. A circular loop for a suspension chain is located beneath each dragon's neck. The exterior body is decorated with several registers of ornament. A wide central horizontal band contains a continuous programme of interwoven calligraphy in a fluid Thuluth or Naskh script, set against a cross-hatched ground. This calligraphic band is interspersed with circular medallions containing foliate and arabesque motifs. Above this, a narrower border displays a repeating geometric pattern of diamonds and crosses.  H: Approximately 21cm L: Approximately 34cm
