A MAMLUK CARVED HARDWOOD GEOMETRIC INTERLACE ARCHITECTURAL PANEL, CIRCA 14TH–15TH CENTURY. - A carved hardwood architectural panel in the Mamluk style, Egypt or Syria, circa 14th–15th century, of rectangular form, the front deeply carved with a complex arrangement of interlocking geometric designs. The decoration comprises repeated hexagonal and polygonal compartments connected by angular strapwork, with raised faceted bosses positioned throughout the composition. The dense geometric scheme and strongly architectural character are characteristic of the elaborate carved woodwork associated with Mamluk interiors, where related panels formed elements of doors, screens, cupboards and architectural furnishings.
