AN OTTOMAN ISLAMIC CALLIGRAPHIC JANAZAH COFFIN COVER FRAGMENT, 19TH CENTURY. - An Islamic calligraphic textile panel of a type used for religious purposes, likely an Ottoman janazah or coffin cover fragment. The item consists of a rectangular green central band stitched onto a larger, plain-woven brown textile support. The central panel features a single line of Arabic calligraphy in a stylized script, bordered by flame-like and scrolling decorative motifs, all executed in yellow thread. The inscription is a Sunni religious invocation that reads: رضي الله تعالى عن أبي بكر و عمر و عثمان و علي و عن باقي الصحابة أجمعين (Radi Allahu Ta'ala 'an Abi Bakr wa 'Umar wa 'Uthman wa 'Ali wa 'an baqi al-Sahaba ajma'in). This translates as: May God Almighty be pleased with Abu Bakr, 'Umar, 'Uthman, and 'Ali, and with all the rest of the Companions.
