AN OTTOMAN STYLE TALISMANIC SHIRT JAMA. - An Ottoman style talismanic shirt, also known as a jama, constructed from cream-coloured cotton fabric panels hand-stitched together. The entire surface of the garment is covered in a dense calligraphic and iconographic program executed in black and red ink. The front features a central V-neck opening and short sleeves. The decorative scheme includes several large radial shamsa medallions containing the names Allah and Muhammad. Iconographic depictions on the front include the Nalain Shareef (the Prophet's sandals), an aftaba (ewer), a comb-like miswak, and various weapons including a curved Zulfiqar-style sword and daggers. A prominent rectangular panel at the lower right contains the Surah Al-Fatiha in bold black Thuluth script. The back of the shirt features four large vertical circular calligraphic medallions in a tughra style, including the names Allah and Ya Ali. A central vertical panel in red ink contains dense complex calligraphy, flanked by multiple rectangular grids containing minute micro-script transcriptions of Quranic verses and protective prayers. The text is primarily in Arabic and includes the Asma al-Husna (99 Names of God) and various protective du'as.
