A CAUCASIAN SOUMAK PICTORIAL ANIMAL PATTERN KILIM RUG, 20TH CENTURY. - This Caucasian Soumak flatweave rug, dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, features a complex pictorial zoo design on a cream field. The central vertical axis is defined by a large, stepped cruciform medallion in navy blue and madder red. The field is densely populated with stylized animal motifs, including two pairs of large, confronted peacocks with patterned tails, camels, deer, and various smaller birds and quadrupeds. Deep red honeycomb or scale-patterned panels are positioned at the top and bottom of the main field. The rug is framed by a main madder-red border containing polychrome geometric florets, flanked by multiple guard stripes with wave and running dog patterns. Hand-woven using the Soumak extra-weft wrapping technique, the rug is constructed from hand-spun wool on a wool foundation using natural dyes. The reverse side exhibits the characteristic loose yarn tails associated with this weaving method. Approximately 155 x 112cm
