A SAFAVID TINNED COPPER SURAHI OR WATER FLASK, PERSIA, 17TH CENTURY. - A tall, slender-necked decorative vessel known as a surahi, constructed from copper with a tinned surface finish. The form features a pear-shaped body supported by a splayed circular pedestal foot, rising to a long neck with a central globular knop and terminating in a flared trumpet rim. The exterior is decorated with engraving and chasing. The decorative programme consists of interlocking floral and foliate scrolls, known as islimi patterns, set against a darkened, recessed background. A horizontal band of calligraphic inscriptions in Persian or Arabic script is positioned around the shoulder, contained within individual cartouches. The lower portion of the bulbous body is embellished with a radiating petal motif. The neck and foot are decorated with repeating floral borders.  H: Approximately 46cm
