A PERSIAN QAJAR LACQUERED PAPIER-MÂCHÉ PEN BOX QALAMDAN, 19TH CENTURY. - A 19th-century Persian Qajar lacquered papier-mâché pen box, also known as a qalamdan. The object is constructed from papier-mâché with a polychrome lacquered finish. The exterior surfaces are decorated with hand-painted narrative scenes depicting various figures in traditional Qajar attire, including robes and distinctive headwear such as turbans and kolahs, set within a landscape of trees and architectural structures. The top surface shows a social gathering with figures engaged in dining and conversation. The side panels continue the figurative theme with individuals in various poses, including reclining and meditative positions. The underside of the case and the exterior sides of the sliding drawer feature a gold-painted scrolling foliate and floral arabesque pattern, likely islimi, over a deep red ground. The interior of the sliding compartment is finished in a dark green pigment. The box retains its original sliding mechanism and rounded form. L: Approximately 25.2cm
