M. SALEEM (SAUDI ARABIAN, 1939-1997), ABSTRACT HURUFIYYA COMPOSITION, 1989. - Mohammed Al-Saleem (Saudi Arabian, 1939-1997). A large abstract Hurufiyya composition executed in oil on canvas. The painting features stylised and interconnected Arabic calligraphy, rendered in a palette of dark navy blue, chocolate brown, and charcoal grey. These central forms are set against a background of undulating, horizontal wave-like bands in pastel shades of dusty pink, pale yellow, and sage green, a style characteristic of the artist's Afaqia (Horizon-ism) period. The application of colour is flat and precise, with clean, flowing outlines defining the calligraphic shapes. The work is signed in the lower right corner with both Arabic characters and the Latin script M. Saleem, and is double-dated 1989 and 1410 H. Approximately 140 x 71.8cm
