JOSÉ DE GUIMARÃES (b.1939) - "Homo Sapiens"
Serigraphy on paper, signed, dated 1988 and numbered 12/130. Dimension: 50x35 cm. The serigraphy is cataloged in the graphic work " Volta ao Mundo" by José de Guimarães, on page 163. The work is accompanied by a photocopy, on cardboard, of the catalog page where it is cataloged and of its cover.#José de Guimarães (b.1939), adopts the name Guimarães, in honor of his birthplace, in 1961, when he left for Paris. Painter of violent shapes and colors in his aggressive stylizations, sometimes cartoonish, with decomposition and juxtaposition of real or imaginary elements. He is also a sculptor and engraver and his work is influenced by African art. He attended engraving courses at the Sociedade Cooperativa de Engravers Portugueses where he met Hogan, Júlio Pomar, Almada Negreiros, Bartolomeu Cid dos Santos, among others. He received a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. He exhibited individually at the FCG, at the Serralves Foundation: "Retrospective Exhibition 1982-1992"; at the "Hong Kong Arts Center" and the "Palais des Beaux-Arts" in Brussels. He is still represented in the Wurth Museum, Germany; at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Brussels; at the Rockefeller Art Center in New York and at the French State Collection - National Fund for Contemporary Art. In 1990, he was awarded by the President of the Republic with the Degree of Commander of the Order of Infante D. Henrique. In 1999 he created the sculpture "Lisboa", erected in honor of the city's builders over the centuries. In 2001 he received the Career Consecration Award, awarded by the Portuguese Society of Authors, in 2009 the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit and, more recently, in 2019 he was awarded the Career Consecration Award by the Portuguese Society of Authors.
