American Empire Mahogany Chest of Drawers - An American Empire chest of drawers, also referred to as a bureau or commode, dating to approximately 1840. The piece is constructed with highly figured, book-matched crotch mahogany veneers on the drawer fronts and side pillars. The silhouette features a deep, overhanging top drawer supported by massive, projecting S-scroll side pillars that terminate at the plinth base. Below the top drawer are three graduated full-width drawers. The drawers are fitted with eight pressed clear glass knobs of octagonal floral form. Small circular keyhole openings are centered on the drawer fronts. The case rests on a block plinth base. No maker marks are visible.
