Japanese Arita Blue and White Porcelain Landscape Charger, Meiji Period - A large Japanese Arita porcelain charger featuring hand-painted underglaze blue decoration. The central well depicts a traditional landscape scene with a rocky foreground featuring a gnarled pine tree. The middle ground and background include distant mountains, a pagoda on a shoreline, and small sailing vessels. A group of figures, likely scholars, is illustrated seated on a mat to the right of the composition. The entire scene is framed by a continuous Greek key border at the rim. The reverse of the charger is decorated with three stylized cloud scrolls in underglaze blue. The vessel is constructed with an unglazed footrim showing some staining. A single circular firing indentation is present in the center of the base. No maker marks or reign marks are visible. Large charger scale.
