A Pair of Japanese Meiji Period Nanzan Satsuma Cobalt Blue Vases - This matching pair of quadrangular earthenware vases features a tapering four-sided body, a flared neck, and a pedestal foot. Each vase is decorated with inset rectangular panels containing hand-painted polychrome enamel scenes. The panels depict figures in traditional Japanese dress within garden landscapes featuring cherry blossoms and willow trees. The panels are set against a cream-colored ground with visible crackle glaze. The surrounding body is finished in a deep cobalt blue glaze, enriched with gilded floral and foliate motifs. The base of each vase is marked with two hand-painted characters in red enamel, reading Nanzan (楠山).
