JS Schroter - Rare hand coloured engraving of shells 1782 - This rare hand coloured copper plate conchology engraving, on laid paper, is originally from Musei Gottwaldiani Testaceorum, Stellarum Marinarum et Coralliorum quae Supersunt Tablulae. Die Conchylien, Seesterne und Meergewachseder der Ehemalingen Gottwaldtischen Naturaliensammlung 1782 by Johann Samuel Schroter (1753-1788). Published by Auf Kosten Raspischen Buchhandlung, Nuremberg 1782. From the first edition of a fine illustrated catalogue of the shell collection from the famous cabinet of the Danzig physician Christoph Gottwald (1636–1700). Gottwald's collection of natural history objects, one of the largest in Germany, was continued after his death in 1700 by his son Johann Christoph. After his death the collection was bought by Peter the Great, during the same tour in which he acquired the Ruysch and Seba cabinets. Size: 13in x 8.5in (33cm x 21cm)
