Group of four medals consisting of 1914/15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal and Meritorious Service Medal (GVR); the Star named to 34780 Pte D Maltby
RAMC, the BWM and VM to A/Cpl and the MSM to A/L/Cpl, all RAMC. Daniel Maltby appears to have been born in Hucknall Torkard, Nottinghamshire, in 1885 and was a coal miner by trade when he answered Kitchener’s call for volunteers for the New Armies. However, the absence of birth, marriage and death records for him suggest that he may have enlisted under an assumed name, as was not uncommon during the First World War. The 1911 census records him living with his ‘cousin’, Charles Maltby and his family, but available records suggest that he was not, in fact, Charles Maltby’s cousin. Be that as it may, he served his King and country and was awarded an immediate MSM for valuable services with the British Forces in Italy
towards the end of the war. With copy medal Index Card and other docs. Good Very Fine (GVF)
