A Queen’s South Africa and King’s South Africa medal pair to the Coldstream Guards, consisting of: QSA (2 nd type) with six clasps: ‘Belmont’, ’Modder River’, ‘Driefontein’’, ‘Johannesburg’, ‘Diamond Hill’, ‘Belfast’, and KSA with two clasps: ‘South Africa’ 1901 and ‘South Africa 1902’, both named to: 1441 Pte H J Lincoln Cldstm Gds; Henry James Lincoln was born in Norwich in 1877. A shoemaker by trade, and a member of the 4 th Battalion Norfolk Regiment (Militia), he enlisted into the Coldstrean Guards at Great Yarmouth on 12 February 1898. He served in South Africa with the 2 nd Battalion from 1899 to 1902 and was awarded the QSA with six clasps and the KSA with two clasps for his service. He was tried by Court Martial at Aldershot on 10 July 1907, on a charge of drunkenness, and was discharged on 19 August 1907. Married with two daughters, he worked as a bricklayer in Norwich after his discharge from the Army. Following the outbreak of WW1, he re-enlisted into the 4 th Battalion Norfolk Regiment (Territorial Force) on 1 September 1914, but was discharged as unfit for further military service on 24 October, after just 54 days’ service. He appears to have died at Horsham in 1916. The attractive combination of six “battle bars” on QSAs to the Coldstream Guards represents some 18 months of hard campaigning, including a series of set-piece engagements resulting in heavy casualties to the British troops before the Boers were finally overcome. Note: that the upper ears on the KSA ‘South Africa 1902’ clasp have been neatly removed; with some light contact marking, but generally Very Fine (VF) condition.
