”Family” by Mai Trung Thu, 46.5x28 cm, Print on silk. Mai Trung Thu (1906–1980), also known as Mai Thu, was one of the first graduates of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine (Class of 1925–1930), alongside Le Pho. Settling in France after 1937, he became internationally celebrated for his silk paintings depicting Vietnamese women, children, and everyday life with a nostalgic, poetic sensibility, and was also an expert dan bau player and filmmaker who recorded Ho Chi Minh's 1946 visit to Paris. In 2021, his ”Portrait de Mademoiselle Phuong” sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong for approximately USD 3.1 million, becoming one of the highest-valued Vietnamese artworks ever.
