American Military Chapeau, 1839-1846
An early naval or military chapeau or “cocked hat” of the form used during the 1830s-1840s, made of pressboard covered with hatter’s “beaver finish” plush, with an embroidered and corded cockade of silk on the front, covered by cockade loopings and “button” of gold bullion. There is gold bullion tassels on each side, connected by a gilt wire that runs across the crown of the hat. The interior of the hat has a hat band of roan leather, surmounted by a glazed linen side lining and crown lining of embossed silk, bearing the name of the maker or merchant: HARRIS, STANHOPE & Co. / 29 TREMONT ROW, /BOSTON. Harris & Stanhope opened their new "Military Store at this address in 1839, moving from it in 1846. There is some light edge wear to the hat leaves and a half-inch tear two inches from the right tip in front, otherwise a very good example of an early 19th c. officer’s dress hat. With a hinged hat box of japanned tin.
