WW2 cover 50th ann Sinking of the Tirpitz Signed C Cole, D A Oldham both 617 Sqn on Tirpitz Raid. 12 November 1994 Woodhall Spa Sinking of the Tirpitz Special Postmark Special picture cachet of Lancaster of 617 Sqn. successfully attacking the Tirpitz. The famous 617 Squadron was commanded at the time by Wing Commander J B Tait, who led every attack. On 15th September, 1944 the squadron attacked the Tirpitz' in Alta Fjord with 12, 0001b Tallboy' bombs. Although a dense smoke screen hid the target, one bomb did hit the ship, smashing the bow. As she was unseaworthy, Donitz decided to use her as a shore battery and she steamed slowly to Tromso to be anchored in shallow water. The final attack by 617 Squadron was on 12th November, 1944 in clear weather when at least three Tallboys hit the ship which capsized and rested upside-down on the bottom, trapping 1500 crew. About 800 were rescued. With added cachet 60th Anniversary Avro Lancaster 1941 to 2001 of the first Flight. Personally Signed by Colin Cole Wireless operator Levitt's Crew Operation Taxable 6th June 1944. Also Signed by Warrant Dennis Oldman was a Bomb Aimer with 617 Squadron during World War 11. He was a member of Pilot Leavitts crew. His operations were carried out in Europe including the Tirpitz and Berchesgaden raids. Aircraft flown Lancaster. Certified Copy No 4 of 40.. Good condition.
