WW2 cover 50th ann Sinking of the Tirpitz Signed C Cole, D A Oldham both 617 Sqn on Tirpitz Raid. 12 November 1994 Woodhall Spa Sinking of the Tirpitz Special Postmark Special picture cachet of Lancaster of 617 Sqn. successfully attacking the Tirpitz. The famous 617 Squadron was commanded at the time by Wing Commander J B Tait, who led every attack. On 15th September, 1944 the squadron attacked the Tirpitz' in Alta Fjord with 12, 0001b Tallboy' bombs. Although a dense smoke screen hid the target, one bomb did hit the ship, smashing the bow. As she was unseaworthy, Donitz decided to use her as a shore battery and she steamed slowly to Tromso to be anchored in shallow water. The final attack by 617 Squadron was on 12th November, 1944 in clear weather when at least three Tallboys hit the ship which capsized and rested upside-down on the bottom, trapping 1500 crew.
