Air Commodore Roy Hartley Crompton, OBE, a former commandant of the RAF's Central Flying School (CFS), died on February 17 aged 70. He was born on April 24, 1921. FEW pilots from the post-war generation could have failed at some stage in their careers to have come under the influence of Roy Crompton. For the best part of a quarter of a century he moved in and out of the service's flying schools or served on the directing staff of one or other of the defence colleges. He was at one stage closely associated with the Red Arrows, whose aerobatic showmanship and skills reflected his own ebullience and professionalism. when the display team visited the United States on tour 20 years ago, he went with them as the officer in charge. He won his own spurs flying Hurricanes during the second world. Good condition Est.
