George Cross recipient Eynon Hawkins signed Battle of the Atlantic cover. While serving as a senior gunner on the motor tanker British Dominion, the ship was repeatedly torpedoed by a submarine in January 1943. Despite the ship catching fire and the danger of further attacks, Hawkins swam away but repeatedly turned back to help struggling crewmates, suffering severe burns to his face and hands in the process
