A Trenchard Brat: A Life in Aviation by Frederick Weston. Brewin Books LTD 1999, Hardback. Autobiography of aviation pioneer Frederick George Weston (MBE). The memoir spans his early training alongside Sir Frank Whittle, biplane maintenance, World War II service in the Western Desert, and his later work investigating the De Havilland Comet crashes. The title of his memoir pays homage to the famous RAF Apprenticeship Scheme created by Marshal of the Royal Air Force, Viscount Trenchard. Beginning in 1922, this scheme trained teenage boys (often just 15 years old) at RAF Halton. These young engineering pioneers and mechanics were affectionately dubbed ”Trenchard's Brats”. Weston’s book covers several pivotal eras in military and civil aviation history: Early Service: Training with Sir Frank Whittle, the inventor of the jet engine; WWII: Serving as an RAF Engineer Officer; Post-War Industry: Working as a senior engineer with De Havilland, delving into the Comet airliner disasters.
