The Shetland Bus, hardback book by David Howarth, 1955. World War II memoir written by British naval officer and historian David Howarth, originally published in 1951. The 1955 edition represents one of its highly popular subsequent printings, released around the same time the narrative was adapted into the 1954 British-Norwegian feature film Suicide Mission (also known as Shetlandsgjengen). The book offers a firsthand, detailed account of a clandestine special operations unit nicknamed the Shetland Bus. Operating from the remote Shetland Islands in Scotland, this unit established a vital maritime lifeline across the North Sea to Nazi-occupied Norway. : David Howarth served as a junior naval officer and second-in-command at the Shetland base. He personally managed the base logistics, selected the crews, and coordinated the dangerous journeys.
