Cloak Of Enemies, hardback book by Tom Keene, 2012. The book details the internal political warfare surrounding Britain's Special Operations Executive, famously dubbed ”Churchill's Secret Army”. While the SOE was created to conduct espionage and sabotage behind enemy lines, Keene exposes the severe institutional rivalries it faced at home from Whitehall, MI5, and the traditional armed forces. This internal climate of secrecy and bureaucratic backstabbing nearly dismantled the agency. Crucially, the book highlights how this lack of cooperation had tragic consequences for the commandos of Operation Frankton—the legendary 1942 ”Cockleshell Raid” in Bordeaux—suggesting that better military intelligence cohesion could have prevented the heavy loss of life during that mission.
