WW2 Rare Battle of Britain Lawrence Dixon 600 sqn signed 21st Ann of First Pilotless Target Drone Sortie RAE Llanbedr 3 Feb 1975 RAF FDC. He joined the RAFVR in June 1940, as an Aircraft hand. He volunteered for aircrew and made his first flight with 600 Squadron on 28th June on an RDF trial. He went on a short radar course at Yatesbury and then rejoined 600 Squadron at Manston on 25th July 1940 as a radar operator. He made his first operational sortie on 28th August, a patrol with F/O TN Hayes as pilot and Sgt. HS Imray as Air Gunner. Commissioned in November 1941, Dixon was serving with 125 Squadron in 1942 at Colerne and later Fairwood Common. In October he teamed up with S/Ldr. FD Hughes and they shared in the daylight destruction of a Ju88 on 4th November. They were posted overseas on 13th January 1943 to 600 Squadron at Maison Blanche, Algeria. They destroyed two Ju88s during the night of 23rd/24th January 1943, claimed a Cant Z1007 on 13th February, a Ju88 on 25th/26th April, a He111 destroyed on 12th/13th July, a Ju88 on the 20th/21st, three Ju88s on 11th/12th August and a Ju87 on the 17th/18th. Dixon was awarded the DFC (gazetted 13th April 1943) and a Bar (gazetted 28th September 1943). On 19th July 1944 Dixon joined 604 Squadron at Colerne to fly again with Hughes, who had just taken command of the squadron. On 6th/7th August they destroyed a Ju88 and, finally, on 13th/14th January 1945 a Ju188 near Rotterdam. Dixon was released from the RAF in 1947 as a Squadron Leader. He died in October 1998.
