Flying Officer Tom (Tom William) Clarkson DFC was a Flight Engineer who joined the famous No. 617 Squadron RAF shortly after the historic 1943 Dambusters raid. He later survived being shot down and captured as a prisoner of war during World War II. Military Service and Operations. Early Tours: He previously completed a tour as a flight engineer with No. 49 Squadron from August 1942 to March 1943.Joining 617 Squadron: He transferred to No. 617 Squadron after the initial dam raids, later earning a Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) and a commission to Flying Officer. The Munich Raid his Lancaster (DV394) was shot down on April 24/25, 1944, during an operation targeting Munich.
