Early 20th Century Fretwork Shadow Box with Locomotive and Abbey 1911 - This mixed media shadow box features intricate scroll-saw fretwork carvings mounted on a burgundy fabric ground. The composition is arranged in several layers behind glass within a deep, dark-stained molded wood frame. At the center is a profile view of a steam locomotive and tender, carved in light-colored wood. This sits atop an ornate scrollwork base which incorporates the date 1911. Positioned above the train is a twin-aperture fretwork frame housing two monochrome photographic or lithographic views of Gothic ruins,   Holyrood Abbey, showcasing pointed arch windows and vaulted ceilings. The piece represents an example of early 20th-century hobbyist folk art. The verso consists of a plain wooden backing board fastened with small nails. 14 x 18 inches.
