Two 19th Century Transfer Printed Earthenware Pitchers - Two 19th-century English transfer-printed earthenware pitchers featuring pastoral and agricultural motifs. The larger pitcher is a bulbous cider jug crafted from cream-colored earthenware with a decorative scroll handle and wide, flared rim. The body is decorated with black transfer-printed ”Farmer's Arms” motifs, including a central wheat sheaf and various farm implements. Several inscriptions are present, including ”God Speed the Plough” and the verse ”He that by the plough would thrive Himself must either Hold or Drive.” The neck is finished with a broad floral and foliate border. The smaller cream jug features an ovoid body and simple loop handle. It is decorated with a black transfer-printed pastoral scene of a couple in 18th-century attire positioned before a village landscape with a prominent church. An intricate lace-patterned floral border runs along the interior and exterior rim. The base of the larger jug features a printed vignette of four birds near a stone wall, while a small floral sprig is printed on the interior bottom.
