Bidspirit auction | Albert Steiner Signed St. Moritz
Albert Steiner Signed St. Moritz Original Photograph - A vintage silver gelatin photograph depicting a panoramic winter landscape of St. Moritz, Switzerland. 45cm wide . 37cm tall Albert Steiner’s photographs were important because they fundamentally shaped the global perception of Switzerland as a timeless, pristine alpine paradise. Active primarily between 1910 and 1930, Steiner was a pioneer who helped elevate photography from a basic documentary tool into an accepted form of fine art in Switzerland. He is frequently compared to Ansel Adams for his ability to capture the majesty and ”good bone structure” of grand mountain landscapes in black and white. The black and white image captures a high-angle view of the snow-covered valley, featuring the town’s alpine architecture, a frozen lake, and dense evergreen forests leading up to the surrounding mountain peaks. The print is mounted to a cream-colored board and housed in a simple black-painted wooden frame behind glass. Below the image on the left, a handwritten pencil inscription reads ”St Moritz Bad und Dorf - im Winter -”. To the lower right, the photographer has signed the mount in pencil as ”Alb. Steiner - St Moritz”. The reverse of the frame is sealed with brown paper, which has deteriorated to expose metal glazing points and the wooden frame backing.
