The obverse pattern coin features a portrait of Robert Burns based on the Alexander Nasmyth painting, inscribed with the text ROBERT BURNS, 1759 2009, and SCOTLAND. The reverse pattern coin displays a map of Europe within the stars of the European Union, a sailing vessel, and the numeral 5. Both coins are mounted in a blue mat within a silver-toned wooden frame. A printed adhesive label at the base serves as a certificate of authenticity, featuring a logo with a scroll reading 2009 Year of Homecoming SCOTLAND PATTERN 5 EURO.
